On June 1, 2012, on the occasion of the foundation establishment, the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch opens its first exhibition presenting a selection of graphic works by the painter Neo Rauch, who was born in Leipzig and raised in Aschersleben.

The painter Neo Rauch, the city Aschersleben and Gerd Harry Lybke as well as Kerstin Wahala (Galerie EIGEN + ART), have established the foundation together in Neo Rauch’s hometown Aschersleben in 2012. The cause of the foundation establishment came up with the painter’s beneficence to his hometown: Neo Rauch donated his complete graphic work to his hometown on September 2010. Since then, Neo Rauch gave one copy of each graphic work of his previous editions to the foundation. That way, the presentation of his graphic oeuvre, which was created since 1993, should be guaranteed by this non-profit organization. Moreover, each copy of all future graphic works shall be included to the collection of the foundation.

On Friday, May of 4th, the Home Secretary of Saxony-Anhalt Holger Stahlknecht handed the certificate of approval to the first chairwoman of the board Kerstin Wahala and the mayor of Aschersleben Andreas Michelmann in Dessau-Roßlau. On June 1st 2012 the foundation will be seated and will open its first exhibition “Neo Rauch. The Graphic Work – Part One” on the same day. The show will last until March 3rd 2013. The graphic work of the painter will be on display through temporary exhibitions at the “Riegelbau” at the Bestehornpark in Aschersleben.

On the occasion of the opening and establishment, a catalog about the graphic oeuvre from 1993 until 2012 will be published by the Hatje Cantz Verlag. This publication will be accompanied by an essay by Rudij Bergmann and an interview between Wolfgang Büscher and the painter about the topic “home” (Heimat).

The Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch opens its second exhibition on March 16, 2013.
Since the establishment in 2012, the foundation expects its 5.000th visitor.

On March 16, at 4 p.m., the exhibition “Neo Rauch. The Graphic Work – Part Two” will be opened at the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch in Aschersleben. The show can be seen until March 2, 2014. Besides of the works from the collection of the foundation, several drawings from other collections on loan will be presented as well, which has never been on display before.

The painter Neo Rauch, the city Aschersleben and Gerd Harry Lybke as well as Kerstin Wahala (Galerie EIGEN + ART), have established the foundation together in Neo Rauch’s hometown Aschersleben in 2012. At the ‘Riegelbau’ of the Bestehornpark, the first graphics exhibition of Neo Rauch could be seen from June 1, 2012, until March 3, 2013. Almost 5000 visitors came. The cause of the foundation establishment came up with the painter’s beneficence to his hometown: Neo Rauch donated his complete graphic work to his hometown on September 2010. It is his aim to preserve, maintain and present his graphic oeuvre at a foundation.

The press appointment takes place at March 15, 2013, 11 a.m. at the Grafikstiftung.

The Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch opens its third exhibition on May 24, 2014.

Since the establishment in 2012 the foundation expects its 10.000th visitor.

The third exhibition of the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch (Foundation of graphic works) will open its doors on May 24, 2014 at 4 pm, „Neo Rauch. Das grafische Werk – Dritter Teil“, in the presence of Saxony-Anhalt’s prime minister, Dr. Reiner Haseloff. From May 25, 2014 until May 3, 2015, the Grafikstiftung will present selected works from its collection as well as new prints and drawings. Besides graphics the third part will show large works on paper. Two of them have been made in 2014 and will be presented to the public for the first time. Furthermore Neo Rauch’s sketches for the glass windows of the chapel of Saint Elizabeth at the Naumburger Dom from 2007, will be presented. These three works on paper will be provided for the period of this exhibition from Collection Faber-Castell.

The foundation was established in 2012 by the painter Neo Rauch, the city of Aschersleben and Gerd Harry Lybke and Kerstin Wahala from Galerie EIGEN + ART in Aschersleben, the hometown of the artist.
Two exhibitions with grafic works of the artist have been on display in the “Riegelbau” in the city’s Bestehornpark. The reason for the establishment of the foundation was a gift by the artist to his hometown:
On September 2010 Neo Rauch gave one copy of each graphic work of the previous editions to his hometown. Preservation, maintenance and presentation should be guaranteed by a foundation. Since the creation of the Grafikstiftung a copy of all further graphic works is included to the collection of the foundation.

The press appointment takes place at May 24, 2014, 2 pm at the Grafikstiftung. The press preview of the exhibition is scheduled for 1 pm. Please RSVP to:

Encounter KARL BLOSSFELDT & NEO RAUCH

The Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch opens the exhibition Encounter KARL BLOSSFELDT & NEO RAUCH on 30th May 2015.

Since the establishment of the Grafikstiftung in 2012, the foundation opens its fourth exhibition on 30th May 2015 in Aschersleben. The first three exhibitions solely consisted of works by Neo Rauch. In this show, however, two artists from the region Harz meet here for the first time: Karl Blossfeldt and Neo Rauch.

Thanks to the cooperation and support by the Ann and Jürgen Wilde Archive, original photography by Karl Blossfeldt can be seen in context with new works by Neo Rauch from 31 May 2015 on until 24 April 2016.  Blossfeldt’s plant photography is counted among the milestones of photography of the 20th century. His large-scaled photography had been inspired many artists until then. Neo Rauch faces Blossfeldt’s work artistically. His new prints, paper works and drawings will be presented together with Blossfeldt’s photography for the first time in public. An official exhibition catalog will be published by the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch, obtainable from MMKoehn Verlag.

The following persons will be present at the press release: Neo Rauch; Ann and Jürgen Wilde / Stiftung Ann und Jürgen Wilde, Pinakothek der Moderne; Kerstin Wahala / chairwoman of the board Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch; Christiane Wisniewski / director of Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch; Andreas Michelmann / mayor of town Aschersleben. The press will be guided through the exhibition. Afterwards, the possibility is given to ask questions to the people present.

We are looking forward to your participation and previous notice (via e-mail at cw@grafikstiftungneorauch.de). If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

HANNO & NEO RAUCH – Father and Son
Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch in Aschersleben
Exhibition opening on 21 May 2016, 4 p.m.

The Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch opens the exhibition
Hanno & Neo Rauch – Father and Son on 21 May, 2016.

This exhibition shows works by Neo Rauch and his father Hanno Rauch (1939 – 1960) for the
first time. For the showing, Neo Rauch has put together a selection of ca. 50 works from the legacy
of ca. 200 works by his father, Hanno Rauch. Hanno Rauch had begun to study at the Leipzig
Academy of Fine Arts in 1959. The exhibition is the painter Neo Rauch’s very personal encounter
with the works of his father, the artist Hanno Rauch. It presents woodcuts, graphics, and drawings
by Hanno Rauch. Works on view by Neo Rauch include new graphics and drawings, as well as
large-format paintings on paper and canvas.

Hanno Rauch was born in November 1939 in Gera. He grew up in his parents’ house in Gera,
where he discovered his artistic bent early. After finishing school, he attended the Workers and
Farmers Faculty in Dresden to prepare himself to study art. There he got to know the student
Helga Wand. The two of them went together from Dresden to Leipzig. In 1959, Hanno Rauch
began studying at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts; Helga Wand studied book design in Leipzig.
At this time, the painters Hartwig Ebersbach and Heinz Zander were Hanno’s friends and fellow
students. Hanno and Helga’s son Neo Hanno Rauch was born in Leipzig in April 1960; in May of
the same year, Neo Rauch’s parents died in a train accident. Neo Rauch grew up in Aschersleben
with his grandparents. Today he lives and works in Leipzig.

The painter Neo Rauch, the city of Aschersleben, and Gerd Harry Lybke and Kerstin Wahala
from the gallery EIGEN + ART jointly founded the Grafikstiftung in 2012 in Aschersleben, the
artist’s home city. The exhibition Hanno & Neo Rauch – Father and Son is the fifth exhibition
organized by the foundation since its founding and will be on view on the premises of the Grafikstiftung
Neo Rauch in Aschersleben from 22 May 2016 through 30 April 2017.

ARNO RINK – NEO RAUCH

The Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch opens its exhibition on May 27th 2017.
ARNO RINK – NEO RAUCH
Press conference: 2 p.m.
Opening: 4 p.m.

At the sixth exhibition, the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch presents a double show of works by Arno Rink and Neo Rauch – showing two generations of painting artists in Leipzig. Arno Rink was a professor and rector at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig (1972 – 2005). He paved the way for a whole generation of painters and until now his name is deeply connected with the strict and traditionally-minded education at the Academy of Fine Arts, that is why many young students moved to Leipzig or stayed there after their training. Being a scholar of Bernhard Heisig and Werner Tübke, Rink shaped the unmistakable, quaint style of the Leipzig School in the 1980s and 90s. During his 50 years of figural-representational painting, Rink developed a unique picture-language working with mythological allegories as well as examples of art history or modernity. He combines still life objects with human images to depict metaphors. His depiction of portraits, nudes and studio scenes are not only a statement of the obvious, rather an expression of a surrealistic manner indicating the ambiguous and the mysterious strangeness. On this aspect, the viewer may perceive similarities in comparison to Neo Rauch’s oeuvre, who studied at Rink’s from 1981 until 1986.

For the double show, Neo Rauch has created two new large-sized works on paper as well as four lithographs, which are accompanied by a quantity of drawings in a smaller format. Both artists have in common that the scenes depicted unify a ubiquitousness of different historical timescales. Architectural formations, which may be mainly found in the recent years, meet surreal creations and chimera as in a world of difference. There is barely any work, which does not show a human figure, not only demonstrating the mere physique of human kind, rather presenting protagonists and staffage in an environment based on an own picture language, perceived by the viewer individually.

DAS KOLLEGIUM

Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch
Opening: 25 May 2019 | as of 4:00 p.m.
Exhibition: 26 May 2019 – 3 May 2020

Hans Aichinger | Mamma Andersson | Tilo Baumgärtel | Michaël Borremans | Sebastian Burger | Robert Crumb | Marcel Dzama | Hartwig Ebersbach |  Rosa Loy | Kerry James Marshall | Jonathan Meese | Jockum Nordström | Neo Rauch | David Schnell | Kristina Schuldt | Sebastian Speckmann | Michael Triegel | Luc Tuymans | Rose Wylie | Lisa Yuskavage

We are happy to announce the 8th exhibition at the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch opening on
25 May 2019. The exhibition with the title DAS KOLLEGIUM is bringing together
primarily graphic works by 19 international artists born between 1934 and 1982, friends and
companions of Neo Rauch whom the artist invited to take part in this group presentation.
The German word “Kollegium” can be translated as a group of colleagues operating in the
same job or office, faculty or team. The “colleagues” in the exhibition are all linked through
their profession as artists, but there are further network-like connections between them by
way of Neo Rauch’s biography.

The links go back to when Neo Rauch studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig.
among them his companions from the academy, Hans Aichinger and Michael Triegel as well
as Hartwig Ebersbach, who taught there when Neo Rauch began to study painting.
The Baumwollspinnerei in Leipzig represents another connection. It is home to Neo
Rauch’s Gallery EIGEN + ART, and many of the artists included in the exhibition have
their studios there, such as Tilo Baumgärtel, David Schnell, Kristina Schuldt, Sebastian
Burger as well as Hans Aichinger, Michael Triegel and Neo Rauchs wife, the artist Rosa
Loy.

A longstanding collaboration with the New York-based gallery David Zwirner has extended
Neo Rauch’s circle of colleagues and friends to include international artists such as Mamma
Andersson, Michaël Borremans, Marcel Dzama, Kerry James Marshall, Jockum Nordström,
Luc Tuymans, Rose Wylie, Lisa Yuskavage and Robert Crumb.

The exhibition focuses on graphic works, ranging from unique works on paper by Rose
Wylie, drawings by Hartwig Ebersbach, mixed media on paper by Marcel Dzama to various
printing techniques such as lithographs, as in the works of Jonatahan Meese, linocuts by
Sebastian Speckmann, aquatint etchings by David Schnell or polymer engravings by
Sebastian Burger.

Neo Rauch has created two large-format works on paper especially for the exhibition,
among them the title eponymous work Das Kollegium.

In previous exhibitions, works by Neo Rauch already engaged in a dialogue with those by
other artists, including Arno Rink, Karl Bloßfeldt and Rosa Loy.

The upcoming show is the first group exhibition to be presented at the Grafikstiftung since
its foundation. It is kindly supported by the NORD/LB Kulturstiftung.

A press preview will take place on Saturday, 25 May at 2:00 p.m.

NEO RAUCH
DAS FORTWÄHRENDE
Works on Paper 1989 1995

Graphics Foundation Neo Rauch
Exhibition period: 6th June 2020 – 2nd May 2021

From June/6/2020 on, the Graphics Foundation Neo Rauch presents its ninth exhibition mainly encompassing works on paper created between 1989 and 1995 by Neo Rauch. The show is complemented with the large-sized works „Das Ziel“(1995) and „Die Küche“(1995) on loan and prints from the foundation’s collection.

Neo Rauch’s oeuvre dated before 1993 rarely had been in the public eye. During this time, the artist preferred to work on paper with oil paint, graphite, ink and watercolor in order to develop an individual picture language in his drawings, paintings and the art of printing. A broad variety is given by the choice of formats.

Neo Rauch on the matter: “The works had been kept in my drawers for almost 30 years and were brought to light in the course of preparing the exhibition in the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts. In Aschersleben, the more intimate surrounding of the foundation already guarantees that these sheets will find an inclined audience in their whole – occasionally touching – indefiniteness. They are too fragile and in need of protection than to expose them to the traffic of the big stage; yet, they have come so close to me that I believe I can take responsibility for their presentation. In a sense, they form the hotbed of my creative work, and come as hesitant steps out of the unspecified.

The Graphics Foundation Neo Rauch is responsible for the museum of the same name in Aschersleben and developed to a vibrant place for contemporary art in Saxony-Anhalt since its founding in 2012. After several solo shows presenting Neo Rauch’s graphic oeuvre, double shows and the first group exhibition followed. The Graphics Foundation is pleased to present a special exhibition on the occasion of the artist’s 60th birthday.

The exhibition is kindly supported by the NORD/LB Kulturstiftung.

VORDER – MITTEL – HINTERGRUND
Hartwig Ebersbach – Stefan Guggisberg – Neo Rauch

Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch
Exhibition opening: 29th / 30th May 2021
Exhibition period: 31st May 2021 – 20th March 2022

From 29th May 2021 on, the Graphics Foundation Neo Rauch presents an encounter of three artist generations living in Leipzig (Germany) in its latest group show: Hartwig Ebersbach, Neo Rauch and Stefan Guggisberg.

Hartwig Ebersbach, born in Zwickau (Germany) in 1940, completed his studies in painting under the mentoring of Professor Bernhard Heisig at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig from 1959 until 1964. The close relationship with Neo Rauch exists twofold: Hartwig Ebersbach not only belonged to the teaching generation during Neo Rauch’s studies in Leipzig but he was also a fellow student of the early deceased father Hanno Rauch. Hartwig Ebersbach’s oeuvre is marked by its expressive, predominantly abstract work built on a distinctive strong and pastose color application.

Neo Rauch, born in Leipzig in 1960, studied in Professor Arno Rink’s class at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig from 1981 until 1986. He later became a master-class student under the supervision of Bernhard Heisig and finally held a professorship from 2005 until 2014 at the same arts academy. Neo Rauch especially gained national and international reputation through a prominent figurative picture language in his work. In the period of his teaching profession, he has mentored a new generation of painters and encouraged them to follow their own artistic inspirations and expressions.

In this context, the group show’s encounter is complemented by the artistic contribution of Stefan Guggisberg, born in Thun (Switzerland) in 1980. From 2005 until 2009, he studied photography and painting in the classes of Christopher Muller, Neo Rauch and Timm Rautert at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. He was a master-class student of Neo Rauch until 2012. Stefan Guggisberg dedicates himself to paper as a support medium on which he delicately removes several layers of paint to make numerous hidden forms and structures visible.

The exhibited works present similarities of the artists’ proficiencies and their classic teaching as well as their distinctions of artistic expressions. This enthralling correlation featuring a repertoire of diverse forms, colors, subjects and selected materials is what makes this exhibition so exceptional.

The Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch is the museum’s institution of the same name in the town Aschersleben and developed to a lively venue for contemporary art in Saxony-Anhalt since 2012. After a number of solo shows featuring Neo Rauch’s graphic oeuvre, numerous double exhibitions and a noteworthy group show were held within the last years.

We kindly thank the NORD/LB Kulturstiftung for its support.

The press conference takes place at the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch on Friday, 28th May 2021, 11 AM. In response to regulations and social distancing rules, prior reservations are required.
